A new study on mice suggests that exposure to some germs early in life helps prevent asthma and other immune system-related ailments. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital conducted a study on mice held in germ-free cages. They found that at least in mice, when they are completely germ-free, a rare part of their immune systems works too well, with cells multiplying in the lungs and gut. In the mice, it was an over growth of invariant natural killer T cells which caused inflammation in the lungs and colon.
