Asthma is a chronic disease that makes breathing difficult for millions of Americans, both adults and children. There is no medication to cure asthma, but asthma drugs can be used to control, prevent and treat asthma symptoms. Choosing the proper drug is critical in avoiding asthma attacks and staying active life. Drugs used to treat asthma can be divided into two general categories:

  • Long term control drugs are taken daily to prevent symptoms, brand name drugs include:
  • Inhaled Corticosteroids – Flovent diskus and inhaler, Symbicort
  • Long-acting Beta-Agonists – Foradil Aerolizer, Serevent Diskus
  • Cromolyn and Theophylline – Generic Cromolyn Nebulizer Solution
  • Leukotriene Modifiers – Accolate, Singulair
  • Immunomodulators – Xolair
  • Quick relief asthma drugs, or asthma rescue drugs – include generic Proair inhaler, Proventil HFA and Ventolin inhaler are taken as needed for symptom relief

    There are two general types of asthma medication which can provide long term control or quick relief of symptoms:
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs, called steroids or corticosteroids – Entocort EC, Pulmicort
  • Bronchodilators – Albuterol, Spiriva

    There are many different asthma drugs come in different forms:

  • Dry powder inhaler – Advair diskus, Spiriva
  • Injections – Xolair
  • Meter dosed inhaler (MDI) – Proair HFA
  • Nebulizers – Omon and Pari Nubulizer
  • Oral Liquid – generic Prednisolone
  • Oral Pills – Delatasone, Montelukast
